a distant horizon

it's may. you might have noticed, but if not; it's may.

last august, malawi and i flew from san francisco to auckland. then we took the train to wellywellywellington and attempted to live there. we were blown away, though. in an atmospheric way. we celebrated our first anniversary laughing at lambs and then dragged our stuff to melbourne. that was october.

we've had more success living in melbourne. malawi was given heaps of money to be smart and to kill fish for science. we hung up some pictures and bought some cutlery. i got work, which sucked, then got some work, which unsucked. friends were made in a tentative, butt-sniffy sort of way.

now, in a pair of weeks, my folks and godfolks are coming to visit. a few weeks after that, i'm flying to new york and then, in july, on to san francisco.

it will have been almost a year since i was home.

buying the plane ticket home has evoked a sensation within me that i can only really describe in cinematic terms, so bear with me. do you know that effect, first used by hitchcock in vertigo as far as i know, but also by speilberg in jaws among others, where the camera is pushed in towards the subject while the lens is simultaneously zoomed out? so the subject stays the same size in the frame but the back and foreground both do that wonky stretching thing?

yeah. that's how i feel. you don't know what i'm talking about, but i can live with that. if you can't; rent Jaws. watch for the scene where Roy Schieder witnesses the shark attack on the beach. Jaws is great. we love robert shaw.

anyway. buying this airline ticket has sort of stretched out the past year for me. i'm looking around now going, "australia? married? australia? macaque on a kitten? what!"

you see how i'm confused?

i've decided to come home for longer vs. shorter, figuring it's so damn expensive to get there, might as well soak it up. plus july is summer in the north and winter down here.

i'm not sure how it will feel to be home, or to return to melbourne after being home. i can only hope that melbourne continues to grow on me. we're here for another three years at least, so...

see you soon?

so that's me and madonna on one of the most highly trafficked websites in the world.

i'm drinking whiskey. it's good.

yeah, dats right.

New York City. July. Backstage passes to the Live Earth concert with Bon Jovi (could you just die?!), The Police, Dave Matthews Band, Roger Waters, and many many many other acts whom I have not actually heard of so much, being an old coot.

that's me.

plus, i'll be flying through San Francisco, so if you're there, i'll see your ass this summer.

i've been blogging for Live Earth for a week now.

so far, reasonably good.

i'm learning a hell of a lot about environmentalism and uh... would you quit screwing up the Earth, please? i've learned that everything is really your fault. if only you'd take shorter showers and ride a bike more and stop attacking iraq, things would be better for all of us.

no. really. i am learning a lot and a lot of it is not such good news. it isn't really your fault, though. still, the time to reconsider your less-green habits is now.

i've been working extry hard this week. probably put in 60-70 hours.

today i feel like i'm pushing the ball instead of running in front of it. if you felt like visiting my blog a lot and commenting on things and linking to it, that would not suck at all.

it would be appreciamatated.
