i've never been to new orleans.
i've driven back and forth across the united states a few times, but have never set foot in louisianna.
in the past few days, i've been trying to picture what it's really like there. many are comparing the destruction in NOLA to the San Francisco fire.
i live in San Francisco. can i picture what it would be like if in the course of a day 80% of the city was made uninhabitable? if the entire mission was condemned, soma blown away, everything short of twin peaks or pacific heights under feet of contaminated water?
i can't. i can't put myself in that place. it's too unbelievable. an entire city is gone. it will be months before they can even begin to tear down what's left of hundreds of thousands of homes. and where will those people go? real people. lucky to live in the houston astrodome? lucky to be alive?
i've never been to new orleans. i wonder if they'll give it another name when it's rebuilt? newer orleans.
it's simply horrific. take a look around you and be thankful for what you have. one bad day and it can all wash away.
