Everyone's a Winner

last night was Corg's birthday.

he had him a wee party.

there was quite an impressive bar there. quite impressive.

so me and and House of the house made up a lil' game that we managed to get the whole party playing. it was, and is, one of the stoopidest games i have ever been involved in.

i'm very proud.

it's called ring toss.

yeah. so i'm married now.

i am a husband. i have a wife. there are rings. photos are in the mail. a piece of cake is still in the fridge.

trying to write about everything is significantly more than daunting.

it was, without question, a shatteringly fun wedding. bartlebee and i poured our hearts out in speeches. she looked divine in her dress. i wore a fedora. my brother-in-law threw down a ceremony that made the cold-hearted consider love and the non-jews consider having a jewish wedding. i stomped hell out of the glass. we danced with our friends and families for what felt like hours, round and round and up and down in chairs. holding my niece, clutching my brother, kissing my friends. they sat us down and performed for us, the most ridiculous acts of gut-wrenching silliness we'd ever seen: fish faces, mexican wrestling, and the worst robot ever. dinner, more hugging, more dancing, an ambulance (he's fine), and the toasts! the room all squinted in unison and "arrrrghed" like pirates. tables competed unbidden to prove their spirit. the whole room did the wave.

yeah. they did the wave at our wedding. one end of the room to the other and back. my bubbe, my parents friends, everyone on their feet waving their hands in the air. 'cause we were so fucking happy.

and then it was over. the dj winds it down and my sister stumbles out to lead the shortest of closing prayers. all of us in a huge circle in a room filled with confetti and party hats and half-full glasses of champagne. seven of our friends raise their voices to us -- wishing us well -- and the last of them? he has the whole group screaming, "oh! yes! oh god! oh god yes!" and that's how the wedding built to a climax.

i hope it was good for you. i'm still completely exhausted.

and thinking about packing for africa.

i will post pictures and probably more stories about the wedding on the official wedding website. please feel free to check it out if you're interested. i'll get to it asap. after all, we're leaving for africa in three weeks.

i wish i could have invited all of you. so much love! and that's just the beginning.

as far as i have planned, i never have to go to work again.

that is an odd feeling. it sort of kept me up last night.

these past few days at work have been non-stop, action-packed, and other gene shallit-esque adjectives. on wednesday we hired my replacement. at 4:00 pm. HR asked her to start thursday at 9:00 am and she agreed.

then i scrambled to find tickets for bartlebee and me to the gala which was that evening. normally the SFS staff gets free tickets to the gala. it's one of the real perks of working there. in fact, when i gave notice in early june, i made this week my last because i wanted to go to the gala and have that be my last concert.

but they didn't offer us tickets this year. yo yo ma was the soloist and it sold real well and "there were no tickets left for staff."

that's arsey.

there would have been plenty of tickets left for staff if they had HELD SOME BACK for the staff who put on the event, accept below market pay, etc.

people, including me, were very cranky about the lack of tickets.

i woke up this morning thinking about chess.

bartlebee is defending her thesis today. on friday we handed kaya's leash to roberto and said goodbye to the shedding-one. this friday is my last day of work. saturday is my bachelor party.

and the following saturday i get married and then we leave for africa in less than a month.

so the long-term plans i put in motion a year ago are now coming to fruition. when i moved those pawns around last july i had this idea that maybe, just maybe, i could manage to get bartlebee to join me in matrimony, quit my job, and leave the country with minimal plans.

just about now.

in a few more moves it will be mate.

and i've got that anxious, nervous energy flipping my heart into triple time because i can SEE just how close i am but i'm not there yet.

those of you who know bartlebee, we're meeting at the orbit room tonight to celebrate the successful defending of her thesis. probably 9:30ish.

i've never been to new orleans.

i've driven back and forth across the united states a few times, but have never set foot in louisianna.

in the past few days, i've been trying to picture what it's really like there. many are comparing the destruction in NOLA to the San Francisco fire.

i live in San Francisco. can i picture what it would be like if in the course of a day 80% of the city was made uninhabitable? if the entire mission was condemned, soma blown away, everything short of twin peaks or pacific heights under feet of contaminated water?

i can't. i can't put myself in that place. it's too unbelievable. an entire city is gone. it will be months before they can even begin to tear down what's left of hundreds of thousands of homes. and where will those people go? real people. lucky to live in the houston astrodome? lucky to be alive?

i've never been to new orleans. i wonder if they'll give it another name when it's rebuilt? newer orleans.

it's simply horrific. take a look around you and be thankful for what you have. one bad day and it can all wash away.
