Maybe a Smile

my grandmother is dying.

it looks like any day i'm getting on plane to detroit to say goodbye. she had a massive stroke and heart attack and probably kidney failure, too. she isn't coming home from the hospital, ever.

most likely i'll miss my own birthday party.

my father is there with her now, and he says with some imagination one might believe she can tell he's there. maybe even she smiles.

madhavi dropped me off at macarthur bart last night after we had spent the weekend together housesitting for her parents. i lasted five minutes before i called her and asked her to come back and get me. she gets the gold girlfriend star.

she even came with me to see The Day After Tomorrow because i needed to be distracted. surprisingly, we both liked it.

it made republicans look like total assholes. there was a scene where all these americans try to flee south across the mexican border but the mexicans won't let them in. the whole theater burst into spontaneous APPLAUSE.

after the movie madhavi made me promise that i wouldn't go out into the eye of any flash-freezing storms. i promise.

i'm compiling a list (as of right now) of jejune films for future generations. in case you aren't hip to it, jejune is this faux film class that sean and i teach. we show movies that are worth seeing but which one would be unlikely to watch on their own. for example, last week we screened The Miracle of Morgan's Creek. other jejune films have included A Pure Formality, Wages of Fear, Schitzopolis, Ran, and Hands on a Hard Body. if you're a former/present jejuner and remember films we've screened, let me know, please. i'm also interested if you have future jejune suggestions.

okay. whatever. i'm obviously not really into blogging today.

i'm sorry about your grandmommy.

Aw, I'm sorry. That truly sucks. I only got one left myself, and life is not as good without them.
