that's all i have to say today: ketch.
les' sister joey's girlfriend is named ketch. or catch. or nicknamed ketch (or catch). i've never seen it written and only met her once. she's got icey eyes, but this is not about that. this is about the fact that she's named ketch.
nicknamed ketch.
this is a perfect name. a ketch is a type of boat. specifically: a two-masted fore-and-aft-rigged sailing vessel with a mizzenmast stepped aft of a taller mainmast but forward of the rudder.
the word ketch comes from the word catch. it is, i believe, a perfect name. a perfect name for a charcter in an unwritten book.
the ketch i met is nineteen with cropped hair dyed blonde and orange. she wears jeans with holes and patches and shacks up with joey who's shacked up with brother les. joey is twenty-three and teaching children this summer. they're both out west from college at wellesley.
i've never had a real sticky nickname. been this or that for a while, but never had a nickname that everyone knew me by. not like fuzzy or ajax or mojo or ketch.
i'm a little jealous. most likely, at some point in her life, a person decided that ketch was a catch and started calling her that. then everyone agreed and she became ketch.
that's awfully sweet. just think about how sweet that is. imagine everyone deciding that you're a catch so much so that that's just what they call you.
and for me, being named ketch means you can go. means you're built to move. not only are you a catch, but you're a catch because you're hard to catch.
sleek and fast and running with the wind. and worth chasing after.
maybe i will be writing a book soon.
