All Shook Up
yesterday was Bev's last day. Bev's been working at the Symphony since the dawn of time.
when i first arrived, a year ago, this wee grey haired woman peered over my cube and told me i had to come to the peep show, 'cause i was new.
the peep show, a long standing SFS tradition, was when Bev put marshmallow peeps in the microwave and we watched them swell and bloat like a kid with a helium tank jammed up his butt. we're all class here at the Symphony.
people who didn't know her thought Bev was quiet and timid, but then they'd overhear her cursing uncooperative soloists immediately after she hung up the phone. and she held her own at a rough desk for longer than i've been shaving.
yep. Bev was good news. she always dressed up for costume parties. she always did an act at the holiday party. seeing her go is like watching an amusement park close. times are changing.
yesterday was her last day so Liz hired an Elvis impersonator to send her off right. Bev's a huge Elvis fan. when Elvis walked in, Bev literally jumped into his arms and almost started to cry. most of the staff turned up to listen to Elvis get all shook up. and we drank champagne and laughed and said goodbye to Bev.
it was really very moving. and it makes me think about where i'll be when i'm ready to retire (uh, or when i can afford to, 'cause i'm more than ready now). what will i devote my life to? what will make me look back and feel like i've lived a life worth living?
i've got some good guesses. and i'm happy to report i've priced out a trip to my dream destination (no, i'm not telling you where) and it's looking more affordable than i thought.
although that's via plane and i'd rather sail...

ai! who stays that long at a job nowadays anyway? can any of us mtv/add kids last that long? i find that i get antsy after three years at any job...
i can barely make it from nine until five!
